Minnesota garages take a beating that garages in most of the country never see, and it shows up in the concrete.

Frost heave is the number one cause of garage floor cracking in unheated, detached Twin Cities garages. Minnesota's building code sets a minimum frost depth of 42 inches (MN Admin Rules Ch. 1303.1600). When a footing or slab edge sits above that line, the frozen soil beneath it expands and pushes that section of the slab upward. That cracks the concrete right at the boundary between the heaved section and the section that stayed put. It's a soil-and-frost problem, not a workmanship problem. The fix is building deep enough and reinforcing correctly from the start.

The Twin Cities also average 55-60 freeze-thaw cycles every winter. The concrete swells and contracts that many times as temperatures bounce above and below freezing.
